LEADERSHIP
All students must go through an application process after which they will be informed if they have been accepted into the course. Applications are available from Ms. Burdeyny in E111 starting Feb. 1. The deadline to apply is April 30.
Note: Student Leadership 11 & 12 and Global Initiatives 11 classes meet Tuesday and Thursday mornings at 7:00 AM.
Y Student Leadership 10 (YIPS-0A)
Prerequisite: Teacher Permission 4 credits
The purpose of this course is to introduce theories of leadership and to practice leadership skills. The course will be divided each term into lessons of theory and classes of practical application. The Lion Pride program at Yale will reflect the belief that students want to become meaningfully involved in the school community.
NOTE: This course does not meet the Applied Skills Grad Requirement.
Y Student Leadership 11 (YIPS-1A)
Prerequisite: Teacher Permission 4 credits
The goal of Lion Pride leadership is to develop communication, organization, planning, and employment skills to their full potential while practicing each on a daily, weekly & monthly basis. Leaders will be asked to put these skills into motion through developing and promoting school spirit and culture at Yale. In addition, students will be making valuable connections within the school and community that will enable them to demonstrate their leadership role.
Y Student Leadership 12 (YIPS-2A)
Prerequisite: Teacher Permission 4 credits
Senior Lion Pride students will have the opportunity to increase their understanding and effectiveness in the following processes: human relations skills, communication skills, group processes, managerial skills and self-awareness. The goal is to use these developing skills in promoting a positive and inclusive culture at Yale.
NOTE: This course does not meet the Applied Skills Grad Requirement.
Global Initiatives 11 (MIDS-1C) 4 credits
Prerequisite: B average and Teacher Permission
This Directed Studies course has been developed to guide students toward being ethical and effective Global Citizens and leaders. Global Initiatives 11 is based on the experiential education model of “learning by doing”. Topics include examining the meaning of Global Citizenship and the role of students in fostering Global Citizenship. Students will research a variety of global issues and then collaborate on a large project or service campaign that addresses these issues. This project will involve students, staff, families and businesses in an effort to build and strengthen community. Students will develop their communication skills and conflict resolution skills as well as improve their sense of personal and social responsibility in this course.

Y Peer Tutoring 11 (YIPS-1B) 4 credits
Prerequisite: Teacher Permission
This course is available to Grade 11 and 12 students who have a “B” average and an excellent attendance record. The course provides an excellent opportunity for students to gain experience in helping peers. Students will be assigned to work with individual students or selected classrooms. Evaluation will be based on assignments, teacher evaluation, attendance and journals. This is an experiential course, so excellent attendance is mandatory.
Y Peer Tutoring 12 (YIPS-2B) 4 credits
Prerequisite: Teacher Permission
Peer Tutoring 12 is available to Grade 12 students with a solid academic background. The course will involve helping students in regular classroom teaching environments. A mini-teaching unit will also be completed under the supervision of the sponsor classroom. This course is invaluable to those students wishing to pursue a career in education or related fields. This is an experiential course, so excellent attendance is mandatory.
Y Community Services 12 (YIPS-2C)
Prerequisite: Teacher Permission 4 credits
This course is designed to give grade 11 and 12 students the opportunity to work in an environment where they learn to provide specialized assistance to students with special needs. Students will work under the supervision of the Resource Room teacher to provide assistance to students in a variety of contexts. Students will develop instructional skills, communication skills, leadership skills, teamwork, interpersonal relations and conflict management. Students will also learn the value and complexity of social diversity. The course will include some theoretical study in the area of exceptionality, instructional skills, communication skills and leadership skills, and will apply that learning in the context of working with special needs students.
Y Fine Arts Assistant 11: Music/Art
(YED—1A) 4 credits
Prerequisite: teacher permission
This course is essentially an opportunity to provide assistance to a classroom teacher in the Fine Arts area. The course will provide leadership opportunities for advanced level students.
Y Applied Skills Assistant 12: (YED—2A)
Prerequisite: teacher permission 4 credits
Students selecting this course should be interested in helping teachers and students in any applied skills course. Students must have teacher permission.
