Physical Education

For course descriptions in all Physical Education courses.

Classes are held in the gymnasium, lunchroom, pool, skating rink and outdoors. All students are expected to wear suitable clothing for all activities. Gym strip is available at nominal cost. All students are expected to participate on a regular basis, the only exceptions being those who have notes from parents and/or medical excuses provided by a physician.  Assessment will be based upon the following key elements: knowledge, participation, movement skills, safety, fair play and leadership.

Physical Education 10 (PE 10) 4 credits

Yale's Physical Education program utilizes carefully selected activities to provide students the opportunities to develop: a) knowledge and understanding of physical and social skills, physical fitness, principles of movement, and the relationship of exercise to personal well-being; b) physical skills; c) physical fitness; d) social skills; and e) attitudes and appreciations that will encourage participation in AND enjoyment of physical activity, fitness, quality performance, a positive self concept and respect for others.

Physical Education 11 (PE 11) 4 credits

PE 11 is an optional elective for students interested in physical education. The course offers a number of mini units in performance oriented, leisure oriented, active health and personal development activities. These include: speedball, flag football, bowling, rugby, tennis, softball, soccer, volleyball, swimming, badminton, golf, archery, minor games and aerobics.

Physical Education 12 (PE 12) 4 credits

Instruction in performance oriented, leisure oriented, active health and personal development activities. Examples: tennis, badminton, golf, volleyball, bowling, basketball, gymnastics and swimming. These activities will be done with the PE 11 classes.

Y Personal Fitness 11 (YHRA-1D) 4 credits

Personal Fitness 11 is a locally developed secondary school elective that has been designed to help students understand and experience some of the various elements of personal fitness. Students will be expected to maintain an accurate personal fitness log. Term end fitness tests will be administered to plot progress made toward personal fitness goals.

This course is tailored for students wanting to train for competitive athletics or achieve a high level of fitness.

This course is also offered as a gender specific program.

Y Personal Fitness 12 (YHRA-2D) 4 credits

Personal Fitness 12 is a locally developed senior secondary school elective that has been designed to help students understand and experience some of the various elements of personal fitness. Students will be expected to maintain an accurate personal fitness log. Term end fitness tests will be administered to plot progress made toward personal fitness goals.
This course is tailored for students wanting to train for competitive athletics or achieve a high level of fitness.

This course is also offered as a gender specific program.

Y P.E. Leadership 10 (YHRA-0A) 4 credits

This course is offered as an opportunity to become involved in the organization and leadership aspects of recreation. Students entering Recreation Leadership will be assisting the PE instructors with warm-ups, drills, individual instruction and refereeing within the PE classroom. Leaders will also be expected to instruct specific units. In addition to the above, the student will help with refereeing and score keeping for Intramural and Extramural contests (10 hours). Grades will be determined as follows:

1. Affective (In class participation) - 50%

2. Written Tests and Assignments - 30%

3. Extracurricular activities - 20%

Students require instructor's permission to enroll plus a “B” or better in last PE class attended. This course is offered as an opportunity to become involved in the organization and leadership aspects of recreation.
