ESL
During this course students will develop an intermediate level of communicative competence in the areas of listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Students will develop an understanding and appreciation of cultural differences and similarities. Throughout the course students will participate in selected meaningful, real-life situations. Students will develop some academic language proficiencies in order to begin to integrate into academic classes.
Language & Literacy
This course is designed to enable ESL students to improve their academic English language skills. This course will help improve their writing in academic subjects. It prepares students for the English 10 Language Enriched course. The Language and Literacy course concentrates on learning academic vocabulary, as well as strategies for language learning, reading, and writing. This course looks at specific instruction in writing and academic language based on the BC learning outcomes needed for graduation. Students should already be competent in conversational English to take this course.
English 10 Language Enriched 4 credits
This course meets Ministry Graduation Requirements for English 10. The purpose of this course is to prepare ESL students for enrolment and successful participation in prescribed senior English courses. It is also designed to give ESL students graduation credit for English 10, while allowing them to continue to develop as ESL students through explicit language instruction. We will emphasize 1) acquiring academic language skills, 2) developing an understanding of designated core content in English literature and 3) preparation for the Provincial Exam. This course is intended for intermediate – advanced English language learners.
