YALE FUNDRAISER TO FIGHT PERIOD POVERTY STARTS TODAY
50% of the world has a period. Based on that, half of the students in this school have a period. Yet as high school students we see so much stigma about menstruation. There shouldn't be such a feeling of taboo surrounding periods. Further, with problems such as sustainability and “the pink tax” the under donation of period products in foster care homes, homeless shelters, and donation-based organizations has become a public health issue known as ‘Period Poverty.’
Period Poverty is when menstruators can’t afford period products because of rising prices or inflation. To combat this, we are launching a fundraiser that is being held at Yale from Feb 28-March 8, which is also International Women’s Day
All proceeds will go to Sara for Women, which is a non-profit organization providing safe refuge and community-based resources for women. With 8 locations split between Abbotsford and Mission, consisting of transition homes, anonymous apartments and halfway houses for displaced women with mental health issues, substance abuse or those that are escaping abusers.
With a focus on pads and tampons, we are also very happy to accept other personal hygiene donations for women including: deodorant, razors, soap, shampoo, conditioner, etc. All donations should be new and unopened.
Please pass this message on your network. Together we have a loud voice!
Yale will have donation boxes in both the counselling center and the office. Please drop off your donations before March 8th.
While it’s an international issue, we have a real opportunity to make a difference by starting locally.
We are grateful for any donation, no matter how big or small!
Thank you so much for participating.
